    Mack Roach III

    Mack Roach III is Professor of Radiation Oncology and Urology and formerly Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, USA. Since he obtained his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, his research interests have focused on the use of various forms of radiation including intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and Brachytherapy in the management of prostate cancer (PCa).  He has also been involved in pioneering work in the use of hormonal therapy, the implementation of new imaging modalities, PCa risk group stratification and the role of pelvic nodal radiation.



    Professor Roach been an active participant in several clinical trials and chaired two large prospective phase III randomised trials (RTOG 9413 and RTOG 0924).  Both involved the treatment of men with locally advanced PCa and have attempted to shed light on the role of prophylactic pelvic nodal radiation. He also contributed as a senior author to the development of guidelines for PCa treatment planning, published by the American College of Radiology.



    Professor Roach is a member of various medical societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. He acted as an advisor for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) IMRT Working Group and American Joint Commission for Cancer Staging, the American Cancer Society (ACS) Task Force for Cancer Screening Guidelines for prostate cancer and the NCI Concept Evaluation Panel (Prostate Cancer Phase III Trials) and previously as Medical/Scientific Officer Chair of the Health Systems Group for the California Division of the ACS. Professor Roach currently serves on the NCI National Cancer Advisory Board (appointed by President Obama in 2012).
