Abstract

The HUBzero cyberinfrastructure lets scientific researchers work together online to develop tools. Other researchers can then access the resulting tools using an ordinary Web browser and launch simulation runs on the national Grid infrastructure, without having to download or compile any code. The objective is to connect the theorists who develop tools with the experimentalists and educators who might use them.

A summary of how tools are deployed on the HUB:

The tool runs on a cluster of execution hosts projected to the users web browser using what is called a VNC (virtual network computing). The tool runs with the rights and privileges of the user in a restricted virtual environment implemented with OpenVZ that manages access controls to files, networks and other processes. The middleware control all the tool container operations and interactions including running the tool in the background even when the users browser is closed. The sessions however terminate after a period of inactivity. The containers can be configured to access high-performance infrastructure for computes and/or visualization - this enables substantial compute power to the end-user without having to worry about the details associated.
