Issue 1 Overview of NCIP Hub Groups

NCIP Hub is an online community of science researchers who work together to progress innovation and breakthroughs in cancer research. One, of the many, features of NCIP Hub that facilitates this is the Groups capability. Let’s take a closer look at NCIP Hub Groups and how they promote and grow cancer research.

What Are Groups

Groups are simply a community of NCIP Hub users connected by a specific topic area or interest. Any NCIP Hub user can start a group – just click on “Groups” under the Community tab, then select “Create New Group.” The NCIP Hub’s creation tool for Groups guides you through the process. Some things to keep in mind as you start a group:

  • Visibility – Would you like your group to be hidden or visible to the public/NCIP Hub members? Think about the vision and goals of your group. Visibility may be defined separately for each part of the group, such as the overview, collections, calendar etc.
  • Join Policy – Do you want group invites to be open to everyone. Restricted? Invite-only? Closed? Think about how you want your community to grow.
  • Access/Permissions – Once members begin joining, determine who you would like in management roles within the group. Managers can edit group content and media, add events to the group calendar, make announcements etc.
Once You’ve Created Your Group…

After creating a group, take these steps to build the community:

  • Invite – Invite other Hub members to join; or email an invitation to external collaborators. Include a custom message to give your invitees context about your community.
  • Engage – Start conversations on the group forum, create blog posts or add events to the group calendar to spark interaction between community members.
  • Upload – Share knowledge by uploading presentations, teaching materials, videos, datasets and other resources that group members may be interested in.

  • Calendar –Organizes group events. Allows for multiple calendars by topic. Ability to import events from outside calendars. Can add registration to events.
