Issue 3 Exploring the Group Wishlist

Group wishlists on the NCIP Hub are a great way to crowdsource and prioritize tasks, projects or activities. This newsletter will show you how to leverage the group wishlist to enhance your online community.

What is a Group Wishlist?

The group wishlist is a member-created list of tasks or requests organized by priority and ranking. You can use a wishlist to:

  • Make Your Requests Known – Any group member may make a task or activity request.
  • Manage Requests – Group managers may accept or reject wishes, select their importance and set the level of effort needed to get them done.
  • Tap into the Community – Pending wishes are listed by priority. Group members can upvote or downvote accepted wishes. Members can also use the comment thread to have discussions on any wishes.
Getting the Most Out of Your Wishlist...

If you think that activating the wishlist may be good for your group, follow these tips to make the most out of it:

  • Create – Add a few wishes to get the ball rolling. This will give group members a sense of the tone and format for your wishlist
  • Send a group message – Make sure that your group members are aware of the wishlist. Provide a vision for how the wishlist is to be used. Explain prioritization criteria.
  • Encourage engagement – Ensure that group members are voting and commenting on wishes so that you’re getting all group viewpoints.
  • Take action! – The wishlist can be a powerful tool, but only if you use it to enhance your community and its work! It’s the perfect way to show group members that their participation is making a difference.
Features of Group Wishlists
  • Prioritization – Community can up- and down-vote wishes and assign importance on a 0-5 scale.
  • Effort Designation – Members can assign an expected level of effort for each wish.
  • Tagging – Wishes can be tagged by topic.
  • Discussion – The community can discuss a wish using the comments thread.

Have You Been Locked Out of Your Account Due to Spam?

The NCIP Hub has an automatic spam filter that looks for accounts engaging in suspicious activity. The parameters of the spam filter are based on common spam practices seen on this and other hubs. Typically, the account lockout will cease after a specific period of time—but if you reach 10 lifetime spam incidents, your account may be suspended indefinitely. If you find yourself repeatedly under spam lockout, follow these tips to trigger the filter less:

  • Try to be less click-happy—the system checks for numerous clicks in a short time span
  • Manage group settings changes in one session—if you open the group editor to make small changes many times in the row, the spam filter may trigger
  • Avoid link farms—content with 5-7 or more links (such as a blog post) may be flagged

If you find yourself locked out of your account due to spam, email the NCIP Hub admin team using the contact information below. You may also submit a ticket on the HubZero website.
