Continuous Quality Improvement

Physicians play an important role in the health care system and specifically in the process of prevention and treatment of various forms of diseases. A physician’s major role in any health care system is to perform a diagnosis in regard to the patient condition and come up with the treatment plans for various conditions that could be facing the patient. In performing this task, he conducts medical histories of the patient to identify any possible chronic and acute forms of patient conditions in prior periods. Another role of the physician is to provide health education to the patients, the families of the patients and the support staff relating to the diagnosis, patient condition and treatment. He offers resources containing information and research on various patient conditions to create awareness and enhance preventive measures of the diseases. Provision of medical information is also done on physician assistants, medical students, and community residents.

Physicians help in quality improvement process by reducing patient wait times in the emergency rooms and by helping to treat mild forms of conditions and separating extreme cases from minor conditions. In doing so, a physician ensures that more complicated cases are accorded better attention, which reduces overcrowding at the emergency rooms. Various communication techniques that a physician can use to improve communication techniques to the CQI team and staff include providing oral counselling to the patients regarding their conditions and thus speed up the process diagnosis and recovery. Secondly, the physician could provide information by offering brochures to the patients and their families regarding condition of the patient to enhance preventive measures of the disease and thus deter frequent illnesses.

My initial knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement was limited to health care professionals themselves without regard to the improvement in experiences of the patient. Through learning of the CQI, I have known that it is a two way process, which seeks to ensure a continuous process outcome in the health care. This is done by identifying problems facing the health care, implementing, and taking corrective action to improve the effectives of the process. The general areas being addressed by the CQI include access to health care, continuity of care, the intake process, emergency services, and handling of adverse patient outcomes. Thus, the overall goal of CQI is universal and essential element in maintaining a problem free health care system.

The major concepts that I have leant in CQI is that it is a team approach to health care provision. Through CQI, individuals at each department are required to evaluate and improve their work processes as a way of maintaining the overall quality of health care. Secondly, I have learnt that CQI is a preventive approach in provision of health care. The process utilizes continuous innovation to work systems and processes to reduce time taken in acquiring health care as well as elimination of low value processes. More time is spent in planning and control rather than crisis management which were associated with the traditional health care systems. Indeed, physicians can utilize CQI to improve the process of health care by providing maximum commitment and learning the patient expectations from the health care system. Understanding patient expectations is critical in enhancing a more collaborated approach to solving patient conditions. Consequently, it will enable the physicians to identify improvements needed in solving a particular patient condition.
