He is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is jointly appointed in Pathology, Information Sciences/ Telecommunications and Clinical/Translational Research. Dr. Becich he is responsible for the Cancer Bioinformatics Service of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) of UPCI as well as the Biomedical Informatics Core of CTSI. Dr. Becich’s research interests are focused on the interface between clinical informatics and bioinformatics. His research is funded by the CDC, NCI, NCATS, NHLBI, NLM and PCORI and includes programs in clinical phenotyping of patients for genomic medicine studies, tissue banking informatics, clinical informatics and bioinformatics with a special emphasis on data sharing. Dr. Becich is also the co-director of the Informatics Core of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program SPORE at UPCI. Dr. Becich provides his expertise in collaborative translational science to the challenge of identifying and promoting bioinformatics tools that are needed for research teams. Dr. Becich is the principal investigator on several national biorepository, genomic and clinical data (phenotype) cooperative and consortial efforts. Dr. Becich has over 20 years of research experience in collaborative research projects and team science grants, many of which have involved biorepositories, genomic and clinical data sharing, and has contributed over 40 articles in the area of web portals, data management, research collaboration and coordination, biorepositories, genomics and clinical annotation of shared data sets, Therefore, Dr. Becich is eminently well qualified to co-direct the Cancer Bioinformatics Service as proposed in this CCSG application.
