Nano WG: The Challenges of Nanoparticle Characterization: Lessons Learned, Emerging Trends, and the Path Forward –
Thursday, June 27, 2019 @ 11:00 am EDT — Thursday, June 27, 2019 @ 12:00 pm EDT
Nanomedicines are complex drugs with tremendous promise for facilitating new therapeutic breakthroughs. However, these novel therapeutic treatments also pose unique characterization challenges due to their inherent polydispersity, compositional complexity, and the unique relationship between the nanoparticle’s physicochemical properties and the biological performance of the formulation. NCI’s Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) provides state of the art characterization services to help conquer these challenges and advance nanomedicine products into clinical trials. NCL has a knowledge-base in physicochemical analyses, immunotoxicology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology—and has gained expertise from testing more than 400 nanomaterials over the past 15 years. This talk aims to promote discussion of the latest trends in nanoparticle characterization as well as the scientific challenges they face. Challenges in identifying the features and critical quality attributes that are necessary for a nanomedicine’s intended therapeutic function will be discussed.
