Welcome, Dr. Sharpless!
Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless, M.D., took the oath of office to become the 15th director of the NCI on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017. Dr. Sharpless comes to NCI from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, where he served as director of the NCI-Designated Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and as the Wellcome Distinguished Professor in Cancer Research. CRCHD recently reissued the following Career Development Awards to Promote Diversity funding opportunity announcements (FOAs). These awards provide funding and three to five years of protected time to support underrepresented individuals in intensive, mentored and non-mentored, cancer-related biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research career development experiences. A notice was recently issued to inform the research community of the termination of PAR-16-399 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K23). This termination is effective immediately. See Notice Number: NOT-CA-17-033.
The NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K08) will now support training in Basic, Translational, and Patient-Oriented Research (POR), as well as combinations of Basic, Translational and POR. Additionally, the salary support and research development support information have been revised for new applications. Changes are effective as of June 12, 2017. See Notice Number: NOT-CA-17-035.

GMaP is a regional strategy to build critical “hubs” for the support and efficient management of cancer and cancer health disparities research, diversity training, and education/outreach programs.The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) manages GMaP.
